ABLE Human Motion is a Barcelona-based company that designs, develops, manufactures and commercializes innovative robotic exoskeletons to improve the mobility, health and quality of life of people with disabilities. The company was created in late 2018 as a spin-off of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), with the aim of democratising exoskeleton technology so more patients can benefit from robotic rehabilitation. Our first product is the ABLE Exoskeleton: a lightweight, quick to adjust and accessible robotic exoskeleton for gait rehabilitation in the clinical setting. The device is the result of collaborating with hundreds of clinical professionals and patients, integrating their feedback into the design of the product to better address their needs. What makes the ABLE Exoskeleton special? 1) Physiological and smooth gait pattern thanks to our patented electric actuator technology. 2) Designed to make therapist’s work easier: tool-free size adjustments in less than 30 seconds; takes less than 6 minutes to put on, maximizing therapy time. 3) Adapts to each patient’s needs: optional upper trunk support with shoulder straps; multiple modes for stand-up and walking; a mobile application for personalized and data-driven therapy. After completing clinical trials in leading neurological rehabilitation hospitals in Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, in April 2024 the ABLE Exoskeleton received CE certification as a medical device according to Regulation (EU) 2017/745. Thus, its commercialization has begun in hospitals and rehabilitation centers in the European Union. ABLE Human Motion has an ISO13485-certified Quality Management System as a medical device manufacturer and is a member of the International Industry Society for Advanced Rehabilitation Technology (IISART). Our technology has been featured in national and international media (Forbes, Financial Times), receiving awards such as Best European Robotics Startup (ERF) and Innovators Under 35 (MIT Technology Review).
